LOS ANGELES – Your next steps could lead to a cure for breast cancer, a devastating disease affecting 2.1 million women across the country.

On Sunday, October 10, 2004, thousands of breast cancer survivors, friends and family members will lace up their sneakers and use their “soles” as weapons in the fight against breast cancer at City of Hope’s eight annual Walk for hope to Cure Breast cancer at City of Hope’s campus in Duarte, California.

A fun, family-oriented walk and run, Walk for Hope raises funds for City of Hope Cancer center, a leader in research and innovative treatments to prevent, combat and ultimately cure breast cancer.

Participation is easy. Walkers and runners use sponsor forms or personalized fund-raising Web pages to solicit family, friends and coworkers to sponsor walks or runs or to join Walk teams. Adults who raise or donate a minimum of $25 and children who raise or donate a minimum of $15 will receive an official Walk for Hope T-shirt, and prizes also are awarded to top fundraisers.
To register online, log on to www.walk4hope.org or for more information, call 800-544-3541 x26250.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. and closes at 8:15 a.m. The 10k run begins at 8:30 a.m. and the 5k walk and run and one-mile leisure walk begins at 9 a.m. Local marathoners can shape up at this year’s Walk for Hope, which serves as an official training run for the 2005 L.A. Marathon.

After completing their walk or run, participants can enjoy a picnic and festival, featuring food, music and entertainment on the beautiful grounds of City of Hope, located at 1500 E. Duarte Road in Duarte, Calif. Gary Bryan, on-air personality from K-Earth Radio, will serve as emcee of the walk and festival.
Held in cities nationwide, Walk for Hope continues to attract record levels of participants. Last year, over 7,000 people attended the Los Angeles Walk and raised over $636,000 for City of Hope. Since its inception ten years ago, the Walk program has raised more than $12 million for breast cancer research, treatment and education programs at City of Hope.

Walk participants help City of Hope maintain its commitment to groundbreaking breast cancer research, treatment and education, which focuses on treating the whole person – not just the disease. Breast cancer survivor Nadine Mosk, who has participated in several walks and served as Walk chairperson since the first Walk in September 1996, says “In my 20-year affiliation with City of Hope, and as an eight-year breast cancer survivor myself, I have seen first-hand the dedication of the researchers, doctors and staff and the outstanding results they have achieved in treating this devastating disease. There truly is no finer cancer research and treatment center.”
