The Malagos Garden Resort, with the support of the
Department of Tourism and the Department of Environment and Natural
Resources, will hold the Malagos Garden’s Amazing Bird Show
at the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center in Diliman, Quezon
City from October 19, 2004 to January 30, 2005.
According to Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano,
the show will help promote ecotourism in the country as well as
educate Filipinos on the need to conserve the widely diverse species
of birds that inhabit the Philippines, their natural habitats, and
the environment as a whole.
The bird show will have its first run in Metro Manila
since it was first staged at the Malagos Garden Resort in Davao
in April 2002. It has been educating children and adults alike on
the different species of birds and on how they can contribute to
the conservation of threatened bird species, the rehabilitation
of sick and injured wild birds, and the protection of their natural
habitats.
Around 200 trained birds, performing either individually
or as a group, are sure to provide the audience with a unique experience
as they educate and entertain them through various tricks. Spectators
will surely delight as they listen to some of the birds sing and
watch some of them play basketball, ride a scooter, go through hoops,
dance, pick up trash, and interact with the audience.
Dr. Roberto “Bo” Puentespina, the veterinarian
and wildlife conservationist behind the bird show said, “Our
bird show teaches children about environmental preservation and
respect for other living creatures.” He had also produced
shows that featured various animals, such as dogs, horses, goats,
etc., with the same goal of educating children through an entertaining
way.
The bird show is only one of the primary activities
of the Malagos Garden Resort’s Bird Park. The park is constantly
on the look-out for ways to ensure the survival of wildlife.
The proceeds from the bird show at the Ninoy Aquino
Parks and Wildlife Center will be used for the center’s infrastructural
and landscaping projects and to shoulder the costs of sheltering
the birds and fund research on wildlife conservation and rehabilitation.
Durano hopes that the bird show will provide enlightenment
to a lot of people as regards the plight of the country’s
environment and wildlife. A healthy environment and a thriving wildlife
will ensure more tourism, more jobs, and more socio-economic freedom
for most Filipinos.
The Philippines is home to 576 species of birds. Some
of these species may be found only in the Philippines or also in
some parts of Southeast Asia. Most of them are threatened.
