Searching Granny's attic
Copley News Service

With the holidays right around the corner, it might be time to drop in on your grandmother with an early Christmas present and ask her if you can sneak a peek into her attic. You could find a holiday fashion gift or two for yourself.

This season, retailers are scouring the attics of vintage design looking for inspiration for modern fashionistas who are thriving on the new luxurious mood of mismatch style that allows for a new generation to put it all together - their own way.

But while many of us might be willing to search our Granny's attic for a forgotten fur or a jeweled gem, the truth is you can easily get this new chic by tweaking a few new pieces right off the store racks.

Here are a few ideas for getting glamorous a la Granny this holiday season:

- Search out the vintage stores for hidden treasures. If you can't find them in the attic, you might want to browse through a few stores that specialize in retro fashion. You never know what unusual one-of-a-kind piece you might find. A recent trip to one such store proved to be a bonanza for me: a black Persian Lamb stole and a great black patent leather oversized clutch - perfect for holiday soirees.

- Look for holiday essentials at your favorite retailer. Budget vintage look-alikes abound this season: There are shrunken tweed jackets at the Gap, sequined caplets at Banana Republic, sweater shrugs at J.C. Penney, velvety scarves at Chicos, rhinestone pins at Target. Lace-up granny boots at Wal-Mart. You can find designer looks in all price ranges.

- Put it all together in new ways. No you don't have to look like you just stepped out of the 1940s - mothballs and all. Tweak the old favorites in a modern way. Layer a classic tweed blazer over a shrunken sweater vest and let your shirttails show. Belt a cardigan sweater with ribbon or Grandpa's tie.

- Think outside the attic. Wear a vintage crocodile handbag with metallic shoes. Add ropes of pearls to a satin top teamed with jeans. Wear dark opaque hose with a sweet floral print skirt. Throw on a leopard print jacket over your antique brocade pencil skirt.
- Or wear knee-high boots with your little black dress. Wear a vintage tuxedo with a ribbed cashmere turtleneck. Accessorize a lace dress with a floppy 70s style hat. Go for cropped pants with a faux fur shrug.

Go ahead and live a little - in this century. -- Copley
